Welcome Back to School

Dear Parent:

My name is Mrs. Levolyn Williams.  I am the new Criminal Justice I Teacher at Southwind High.  I am writing this letter to introduce myself, and to inform you that I will be working with your child throughout the school year.  This is the first year that Criminal Justice I will be taught at Southwind High.

I am very excited about the opportunity of working and sharing in your child’s education

and I look forward and welcome the opportunity of meeting you.  Criminal Justice I is a 9-week course (each semester) and will be taught as a unit plan that will include textbook readings, online readings, interactive activities, vocabulary words, peer-to peer learning, discussions, debates, films, lectures, quest speakers, and assessments.

During this course, students will study the history and trends of crime and justice within the United States.  They will continue on to study the different types of crime and the consequences of each type.  Students will examine the rule of law and the role of society and culture in the history of crime and the structure of American law enforcement.  Students will also study the sentencing, appeals, and judicial procedures, including: institutional corrections, prison life, inmate rights, release, and recidivism.  Students will review the juvenile justice system and learn how teens can avoid and confront issues that might lead to violation of the law. This requires an understanding of the core elements of the criminal justice system: police, courts, and corrections.

Students will use many online sources, reference books, and encyclopedias which are found at the local or public libraries.  Students are also encouraged to participate in group research projects and activities throughout the course so that they may collaborate with other students and teachers.

Every day we read about crime in newspapers and magazines and hear about it on

television news programs, such primetime shows as America’s Most Wanted, Cops,

American Detective, Unsolved Mysteries, (CSI) Crime Scene Investigation and many

more crime shows.  Crime has become a pervasive influence and a top concern in our

lives. Unfortunately, some of us encounter crime more directly, as victims.  Whether victims or not, we cannot escape the subject of crime in our every day lives.  Crime is the top concern of the American public; as we educate our children, we ask ourselves; what can we do about it?

I look forward to an exciting and productive school year.  I will keep in contact with you on a frequent basis via the office at 752-2881, or e-mail me at l8williams@scsk12.org.
